My Research Process; Why France? Why discrimination and Injustice?
As I turned my paper into Mr. Phillips the stress was lifted off my shoulders and the anxiety dissipated. I was free. As I began my research process to find a topic to write about, I instantly knew what country I wanted to do; France. France is somewhere I have wanted to visit for years and years due to my Aunt Lisa. My Aunt Lisa, who is in the Army, was stationed in Europe and would tell me astonishing stories of her trips to France. She would explain how Paris was the most beautiful place on Earth and how the lights lit up the city like the sun. I had the image of an utopia in France. Unfortunately, as I began to find a topic dealing with France's new anti-terror laws that is when I realized maybe it didn't contain the city of love Aunt Lisa had described. As I began to develop my question relating to the state of emergency ending and the effects of terrorism I was on the opposing side at first, I strongly believed this is what France needs! Stronger laws WILL stop terrorism. I expected to learn that terrorism had decreased and that such laws were an evolving example of change. Suddenly though, I had a change of heart. Muslims in France were beginning to be treated like animals, they were losing their liberties the second President Macron of France signed the new state legislation. I wanted my hypothesis to grasp the idea of unjust treatment of the french muslim community. Therefore, I developed my thesis based on discrimination and the loss of civil liberties which followed my question on terrorism in France. Before researching, I had assumed that the state of emergency was the right fit for France but as I dug deeper I knew I was completely wrong and I couldn't support the opposing side. The research process was difficult, I ran into a lot of out of date sources, inaccurate information, bias articles, and lack of news stories. Sadly, most of the articles were only interested in the past state of emergency and not the future anti-terror laws. I didn't know how to incorporate the information I got to compose a paper. I also felt like I was connecting points to my topic but never throughly answering my question. My biggest surprise was how law enforcement treated a community of people but it reminded me of how police brutality is common in America as well. Why do government officials allow such cruel acts to happen? When will it stop? Since my topic is fairly new, there is no new developments happening. President Macron recently stated that after two years if the laws are not suitable, changes will be made. I disagree with this logic and think a change needs to occur now. The anti-terror laws are still in action and the injustice is still spreading like a wildfire. I hope France stops blaming a religion for the inhumane acts that is in today's world.
